It was in 1889, at the initiative of Emile Guimet, an industrialist from Lyon with a passionate interest in art and travel, that the Musée des Arts Asiatiques - Guimet (Museum of Asian Art) saw the light of day. Emile Guimet went on a round the world trip. From Egypt to Japan, from Greece to China, he managed to build up an outstanding collection of objets d'art that he decided to put into a specialised museum. Gradually, the collection of the Musée des Arts Asiatiques concentrated on Asian art to become what is today the richest collection in the world outside of Asia. The museum's mission is to increase awareness of the Asian civilisations in Europe. Today the museum offers much more than exhibitions of objets d'art. Thanks to recitals, concerts, dance and theatre performance, but also to film retrospectives, visitors are invited on aoyage through time and the world. The Musée des Arts Asiatiques' collection consists of a multitude of very diverse objets d'art, drawings, Japanese woodblock art, posters, paintings, sculptures, weapons, Indian silks, ncunabula, musical instruments, which bring to life the history of Asia.
