It is at the very end of the l'Île de la Cité island, in the very centre of Paris, that we find one of the symbols of the capital, Notre-Dame-de-Paris Cathedral. This masterpiece of Gothic architecture took almost 170 years to build. It remains a remarkable symbol of the great pride of the Middle Ages. On the imposing facade of Notre-Dame, the sculptures tell the holy story. The famous rose window of Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the plus largest in Europe at 12 metres in diameter. Notre-Dame-de-Paris Cathedral and its famous gargoyles have witnessed numerous historic events such as the coronation of Napoleon I. Its magnificence and its history have inspired many a writer, in particular Victor Hugo and his famous novel Notre-Dame-de-Paris.
