15 Destination Ideas for Your Romantic Getaway in France

Do you want to leave for the weekend, or for a few weeks with your significant other, but you don’t know where exactly in France? I prepared this guide to help you choose a place to go.

 

1 – Chamonix

If your common point with your loved one is your love for sports, look no further than Chamonix.

All the activities offered by this city of Haute-Savoie such as skiing, mountaineering, hang gliding or hiking are feasible in summer and winter.

After spending your energy, there’s nothing better than relaxing in a spa to get some comfort after your effort.

 

2 – Paris

We cannot omit Paris, the gorgeous capital city in this list. It is the icon of love and romanticism. You will enjoy it for sure.

We are talking about the Pont des Arts, kissing on top of the Eiffel Tower, the “I love you” wall (mur des “je t’aime”), and why not a ride on a riverboat?

We also need to mention a bar named The 7th which is located on the roof of the Terrass Hotel in Montmartre.

You can admire a panoramic view of the Parisian rooftops, perfect for a one-to-one dinner, drinking your favorite cocktail and admiring a wonderful sunset over the Eiffel Tower, the Champ de Mars and the Invalides.

 

3 – Gordes

Gordes is ranked among the most beautiful villages of France. It is located in the Vaucluse, in the hot and dry climate of Provence.

It is a nice village for a romantic stay, resting under the Southern sun and enjoying a nice stone house.

There are also real troglodyte houses.

Also, visit the Saint Firmin church, a Roman church from an architecture which is iconic among southern France’s religious buildings.

There are also charming little cobbled alleys in the village. They give some nice views over the surroundings of the village.

4 – Saint-Malo

This beautiful port city is appreciated by tourists going to Brittany. It is a very good idea for a trip with your loved one.

You can stay at a comfy hotel so you have somewhere to rest. You will also be close to the beach and the city’s stores and seaside restaurants.

It is the perfect place to eat something nice and watch the sunset with the person you love the most.

There are also spas and thalassotherapies available. You will also be near other points of interest in the region such as the Mont Saint-Michel and the city of Cancale.

 

5 – Nîmes

Another charming city of southern France that is perfect for your romantic getaway.

The city has an interesting past due to the Roman Empire, and there are several remnants such as the Pont du Gard or the Amphitheatre of Nîmes.

Moreover, the beach is close by (30 minutes by car).

You will also enjoy the old City’s charm with its small stores and its alleys making a perfect example of the city’s historical past. This city has a nice atmosphere thanks to its mix of history and romanticism.

 

6 – Corsica

This island is appreciated by couples who are looking for nice destinations to relax and have a good time.

Its climate and its peaceful yet exotic nature make Corsica a perfect place to rest with your loved one.

Concerning the seaside, there are resorts offering a wide choice of activities between spas, thalassotherapy, heated seawater baths, massages with Corsican plants and essential oils… the fresh marine air will let you refill your vital energy, and it will also relax you.

A lot of similar resorts are also available in Porticcio and all of South Corsica.

This beautiful island also has many mountains which will make your romantic destination even more charming: the mountainous region of Alta Rocca also has a lot of resorts with widely enjoyed spas which will free you from any form of stress.

 

7 – The Alsatian Wine Road

Near Colmar, the jewel of Alsace, is a trip focusing on local wine.

Perfect for a romantic weekend, the Alsatian Wine Route is 170 kilometers long. You will visit some villages, wine cellars and other interesting places to discover the wide range of tastes you can enjoy with Alsatian wines.

For the end of your trip with your lover, you can rent charming little lodgings in Colmar and its surroundings, where traditional Alsatian houses will give a romantic atmosphere to your journey.

 

8 – Obernai

This peaceful traditional village located at the base of the Vosges mountain range is a little piece of heaven for romantic stays.

Obernai is far, far away from the city’s fuss. Therefore, enjoy the small fortified city: its charm is picturesque and romantic. Its old ramparts, its fortified towers and its traditional half-timbered houses are iconic parts of the region.

We’re not done with traditional architecture and buildings: the Sainte-Odile fountain or the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church are also iconic places which are worth a visit.

If you have some time and energy left, and if your common point is your love for hiking, discover the Mont Saint-Odile. There is also a convent.

Last thing about this nice little village: not far from its center is the Parc Hôtel & Spa Obernai. It has a very good reputation, and many people from the region come here to relax. It offers saunas, hammams, jacuzzis, swimming pools…

9 – Pays Basque

The charm of Aquitaine, especially that of the Pays-Basque is perfect for a romantic stay with the person you love the most.

The region’s gastronomy is very rich, to begin with. (Axoa, Basque cake, regional wines and cheeses…) You can also discover La Réserve : it is a hotel located at the edge of a cliff. It offers a wonderful view over the Basque coast and the sea.

Further away from the coast is a traditional Basque village named Sare. Here, you will find the Arraya. It is a hotel with a traditional Basque architecture. It was fitted in a former Compostela hospice.

Inside of it, you can find a comfortable and fine place. For sure, you will enjoy its restaurant which offers delicious Basque traditional cuisine.

This is a geopod, to illustrate. It is not from the activity we are talking about, but they are exactly the same.

Here is an unusual activity for your romantic stay in Southern France.

Let’s talk about the Geopod: a Geopod -sometimes called Dome- will allow you to go camping under a sky full of stars. Saint-Michel -l’Observatoire is a small city, whose main activity is the observation of stars, as you can tell by its name. The city also had a nice idea: let the curious people enjoy their activities as well.

The activities offered here are yoga, taichi as well as hiking accompanied by a guide.

The most interesting part is shortly after the sun has set: get in your geopod; It is a ball-shaped tent with a transparent roof for you to look at the stars. You will fall asleep with your loved one under a sky full of stars you can see from your comfortable warm bed.

 

 11 – Tasting Wine in a Castle

An activity enjoyed by couples: the Fines Roches castle in Provence will give you a weekend (or more) to enjoy your room with a view on Southern France’s landscape, breakfasts, and of course, wine tasting.

Everything is included in this pack. If you are interested, the visit also offers to discover the region’s wines through a large wine cellar.

You will also gain some knowledge about viticulture in the region.

 

12 – Ariège

Enjoy the winter season in the Pyrenees with the person you love. In these little cabins in Ariège, don’t bother with crowded areas and standing in line for hours to use the ski lift.

The beauty of the village of Èze (website in French) is also its historical past: alleys of the old medieval village are a good example of this.

In the village, there is also a beautiful botanical garden as well as ruins of a very old castle which is located 400m above ground.

If you want to rest, there are several lodgings in the village. Most of them have the same style or architecture as the old medieval houses in the village.

All of this will give a romantic atmosphere to your trip. Some of the lodgings are located high up, in the region’s relief. Of course, it will give a very nice view over the lower landscape.
