When people think of Paris churches, Notre-Dame or Sacré-Cœur usually come to mind. But hidden in the Latin Quarter stands Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, a church many visitors miss. Saint-Étienne-du-Mont was built over a long period, from the 15th century to the 17th century.

The church stands on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, a hill in the Latin Quarter.

The church was built to replace an older church that had become too small for the growing neighborhood.

Because it was built over many years, the church mixes different architectural styles: Gothic, Renaissance, and some classical features.

The result is unique compared to many other churches in Paris.

The front façade, with its detailed carvings and rose window, shows this mix very clearly. The bell tower on the side was added around 1624.

Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is not as famous as Notre-Dame or Sacré-Cœur, but it has great importance in Paris history.

Over the years, it has remained a quiet, active church while the city changed around it.

Today, it is still used for services, and many people visit to admire its beauty and history.

One of the most special features inside Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is the rood screen, or jubé in French.

This is a large stone structure that separates the main part of the church from the choir where the priests stand. In most French churches, rood screens were removed long ago. But here, the rood screen has been perfectly preserved. It is the last one of its kind in Paris.

The church also has tall columns, stone arches, and finely detailed carvings. The windows are filled with beautiful stained glass that lets colored light into the building.

The mix of styles gives the church a unique feeling, both grand and peaceful.

The organ inside the church is also famous.

It was built in the 17th century and is still used for concerts today. Many people come to Saint-Étienne-du-Mont just to hear the sound of this historic instrument.

Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is home to the shrine of Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris.

She lived in the 5th century and became known for her courage and prayers during dangerous times, like when Attila the Hun threatened the city.

For many years, Saint Geneviève’s remains were kept in this church.

During the French Revolution, most of her relics were destroyed, but a small part of her tomb remains. Today, visitors can still see her shrine and light candles in her honor.

The church has long been a place where Parisians pray for protection and guidance.

Even though many tourists now visit, the church continues to be an important religious site for the city.

Famous People Buried Here

Several important historical figures are buried inside Saint-Étienne-du-Mont.

One of them is Blaise Pascal, a famous mathematician, physicist, and philosopher from the 1600s. His work in science and religion still influences people today.

Another well-known person buried here is Jean Racine, one of France’s greatest playwrights. His plays are still read and performed across the world.

These tombs make the church not only a religious place but also a place of memory for some of France’s most important thinkers and artists.
