La Bastille - This is a reminder of the July 14th storming of the prison which stood on this spot until1789. The July Column, commemorating those killed in the struggles of July 1830 and 1848 now stands at the square's center.
Dominating the scene is the vast rotund glass facade of the Bastille Opera, the world's largest opera house.
