It was on 6 October 1889, in the Pigalle quarter, a stone's throw from Montmartre, that everybody who was anybody in Paris attended the spectacular inauguration of a new cabaret: the Moulin Rouge. It astonished by its extravagance, the vast dance floor, the enormous elephant that occupied place of honour in the centre of the garden and the donkeys that gave rides to the ladies. At the Moulin Rouge, the inhabitants of the fashionable districts rubbed shoulders with the working class, no more differences, everyone was there to enjoy themselves at the Temple of Fun, Dance and Music. It was at this famous Cabaret that La Goulue introduced the famous Cancan, which is still danced today by the Doriss Girls. During its most glorious years, the greatest Music Hall artistes trod the boards of the Moulin Rouge - Mistinguett, Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra... At the end of the 1930s, the appearance of the cinema led to the closure of many cabarets. It was not until the arrival of Jo France after the Second World War that the Moulin Rouge returned to success once again. Since then, the Moulin Rouge has constantly filled its mythical auditorium, by putting on ever more fabulous shows where feathers and sequins prevail. The Moulin Rouge's reviews, famous the world over, immortalised in the old days by Toulouse-Lautrec, are still a great success.
