The Ile St Louis ("Isle of St Louis"), originally known as the Notre Dame (or "Our Lady") Island, was split in two by a canal around 1360. Development of the city on the island was conceived in the reign of Henri IV, but only realized under Louis XIII. Its inhabitants are known as "Ludovicians".
Today, the village atmosphere of the Ile St Louis, with its small shops and its inimitable charm, makes it one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Paris.
