Claude Frollo, the archdeacon, who will stop at nothing to have her, Quasimodo, the hunchback who rings the bells at Notre-Dame but who knows how hideous he is, and Phoebus, the soldier Esmeralda loves but who just wants to have a one-night stand with her.<\/p>\n<p>The drama unfolds around the cathedral and the novel shows us Paris as it was in 1482.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Ladies\u2019 Paradise &#8211; Emile Zola<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21992 size-medium alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Au-bonheur-des-Dames-300x475.jpg\" alt=\"The Ladies' Paradise - Emile Zola\" width=\"300\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> naturalist<\/p>\n<p>The Ladies\u2019 Paradise is a literary classic about Denise Baudu, a young woman from Normandy who takes care of her brothers because their parents have died.<\/p>\n<p>She moves to Paris where her uncle lives and owns a store. She hopes to work for him. Unfortunately, his store is having difficulties because of the new department store, the Ladies\u2019 Paradise.<\/p>\n<p>Through Denise\u2019s story, the author is also telling the story of the department stores in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>In this novel, we get to see Paris at the time of the Second Empire (1852-1870), when the progress of capitalism is threatening the future of smaller stores.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A Moveable Feast &#8211; Ernest Hemingway<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21993 size-medium alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Paris-est-une-fete-322x475.jpg\" alt=\"A Moveable Feast - Ernest Hemingway\" width=\"322\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> autobiography<\/p>\n<p>In this novel published posthumously, Hemingway tells us what he lived through in Paris in the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>He also speaks of his encounters with some famous authors such as Ezra Pound, the Fitzgeralds and Blaise Cendrars.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a way to describe Paris, a city Hemingway loved and where he often went back to.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the places he describes in the novel still exist nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Elegance of the Hedgehog &#8211; Muriel Barbery<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21994 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lelegance-du-herisson-322x475.jpg\" alt=\"The Elegance of he Hedgehog - Muriel Barbery\" width=\"322\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> realism<\/p>\n<p>Ren\u00e9e Michel is a fifty-four years old concierge who works in a Parisian residential building that houses eight luxurious apartments.<\/p>\n<p>The tenants all see her as an uneducated person, but she is a very smart woman who reads great literature and likes philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Palome, a twelve year old girl, lives in this building. She is a disillusioned girl who hates adults and their vain lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>She doesn\u2019t want to become like them. That is why she decided that, on her thirteenth birthday, she will end her life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Suite Fran\u00e7aise &#8211; Ir\u00e8ne N\u00e9mirovsky<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21996 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Suite-francaise-279x475.jpg\" alt=\"Suite fran\u00e7aise - Ir\u00e8ne N\u00e9mirovsky\" width=\"279\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> realism<\/p>\n<p>Suite Fran\u00e7aise is a novel separated into two volumes: <em>\u201cTemp\u00eate en Juin\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cDolce\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is set during World War II and is about the consequences on the daily life of French people.<\/p>\n<p>The first volume is set in 1940, after Paris\u2019 bombardment and tells us the story of several families fleeing Paris.<\/p>\n<p>The second volume tells us the story of three families, more or less related to the families of the first volume, during the German Occupation.<\/p>\n<p>Ir\u00e8ne N\u00e9mirovsky wanted to write three other volumes, but she was deported to Auschwitz and was killed there two months later.<\/p>\n<p>The events she described in her novels were inspired by what she witnessed at her time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Mysteries of Paris &#8211; Eug\u00e8ne Sue<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21997 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Les-mysteres-de-Paris-333x475.jpg\" alt=\"The Mysteries of Paris - Eug\u00e8ne Sue\" width=\"333\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> serial novel<\/p>\n<p>In Paris, in the 19th century, Rodolphe, a mysterious man, helps out poor people and even criminals.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the novel, we don&#8217;t know anything about him.<\/p>\n<p>He gives a chance to people who have a good heart, helping them get a better life, and punishes the ones who deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first French serial novel and it was a big success at the time. It is now a pillar of popular literature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Zazie in the Metro &#8211; Raymond Queneau<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21998 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Zazie-dans-le-metro-288x475.jpg\" alt=\"Zazie in the Metro - Raymond Queneau\" width=\"288\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> initiatory<\/p>\n<p>Zazie is an eleven-year-old girl who spends a few days with her uncle in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>She is obsessed with the idea of riding the metro (subway).<\/p>\n<p>When she arrives in Paris, her uncle has some bad news for her: there is a strike and therefore, no metro.<\/p>\n<p>Zazie will go on surreal adventures throughout the city but her main goal is still the same: she wants to ride the metro.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Father Goriot &#8211; Honor\u00e9 de Balzac<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21999\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21999\" style=\"width: 316px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21999 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Le-pere-Goriot-326x475.jpg\" alt=\"Father Goriot - Honor\u00e9 de Balzac\" width=\"326\" height=\"475\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21999\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Illustration by Honor\u00e9 Daumier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> realism<\/p>\n<p>Eug\u00e8ne de Rastignac is a young ambitious man who came to Paris in order to live there.<\/p>\n<p>He moves into Maison Vauquer, a guesthouse where he meets Father Goriot.<\/p>\n<p>Father Goriot is an old man who spent all his money on his daughters who despise and manipulate him.<\/p>\n<p>Rastignac is helped by viscountess de Beaus\u00e9ant, his cousin, who gives him advice on how to make it in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>This novel is part of his series <em>\u201cLa Com\u00e9die Humaine\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Bel-Ami &#8211; Guy de Maupassant<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22000 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bel-ami-1-338x475.jpg\" alt=\"Bel-Ami - Guy de Maupassant\" width=\"338\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> realism<\/p>\n<p>George Duroy is an ambitious former French soldier who wants to rise the social ladder of Paris.<\/p>\n<p>He is ready to manipulate and to use his charms to get whatever he wants.<\/p>\n<p>He manages to become a journalist, but it\u2019s mostly through his relationships with women of the high society that George Duroy slowly reaches his goal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Phantom of the Opera &#8211; Gaston Leroux<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22001 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Le-fantome-de-lopera-312x475.jpg\" alt=\"The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux\" width=\"312\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> mystery<\/p>\n<p>A tragic incident happened at the Paris Opera: a chandelier fell during a show and an employee was found dead.<br \/>\nA phantom now haunts the opera and terrifies everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The phantom falls in love with Christine, a singer and he pretends to be the angel of music to help her become a better singer.<\/p>\n<p>One day, he decides to kidnap her and to keep her for himself.<\/p>\n<p>Viscount Raoul de Chagny, who is also in love with Christine, goes after them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1991 &#8211; Brian Selznick<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22003 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Linvention-dHugo-Cabret-314x475.jpg\" alt=\"The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick\" width=\"314\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> children\u2019s literature<\/p>\n<p>In the 1930s, in Paris, Hugo Cabret is a twelve-year-old child whose father just died.<\/p>\n<p>He lived with his uncle, an alcoholic man, who then abandoned him.<\/p>\n<p>Hugo lives in a train station where he repairs the clock.<\/p>\n<p>He has to steal his food, but also some material to fix the automaton his father was working on before he died.<\/p>\n<p>He is certain that a message is hidden in the automaton and he must find the key to open it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>L\u2019atelier des poisons &#8211; Sylvie Gibert<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22004 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Latelier-des-poisons-295x475.jpg\" alt=\"L'atelier des poisons - Sylvie Gibert\" width=\"295\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> mystery<\/p>\n<p>The story is set in Paris, in 1880. Z\u00e9lie Murineau is a young and talented painter.<\/p>\n<p>She is enrolled in the Julian Academy, the first painting school to be opened to women.<\/p>\n<p>Life there is difficult and so are the lessons.<\/p>\n<p>But Z\u00e9lie is a strong woman. One day, Alexandre Arbourg, a policeman, asks her to paint a portrait of his goddaughter.<\/p>\n<p>Arbourg wants more than just a painting, he needs Z\u00e9lie to spy his family for him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>An apartment in Paris &#8211; Guillaume Musso<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22005 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Un-appartement-a-Paris-326x475.jpg\" alt=\"An apartment in Paris - Guillaume Musso\" width=\"326\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> thriller<\/p>\n<p>Madeline is an English police officer who decided to rent Sean Lorenz\u2019s workshop in Paris in order to spend her vacation.<\/p>\n<p>After a misunderstanding, she ends up sharing the workshop with Gaspard, an American writer.<\/p>\n<p>Together they decide to look for Lorenz\u2019s missing paintings.<\/p>\n<p>The artist died after his son was murdered and no one knows what happened to the paintings.<\/p>\n<p>They will have to go through a tough investigation if they want to find the paintings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cit\u00e9 19 &#8211; St\u00e9phane Michaka<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22006 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Cite-19-288x475.jpg\" alt=\"Cit\u00e9 19 - St\u00e9phane Michaka\" width=\"288\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> fantasy<\/p>\n<p>Paris, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Faustine is a young girl whose father works at the Orsay museum.<\/p>\n<p>One day, the police came and told her that her father died after he fell from the Saint-Jacques Tower.<\/p>\n<p>When she has to identify the body, Faustine can\u2019t: it\u2019s not her father and she is certain of it.<\/p>\n<p>She decides to go look for him and ends up going back to the 19th century where someone is after her.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Belle Epoque &#8211; Elizabeth Ross<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22007 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Belle-epoque-298x475.jpg\" alt=\"Belle Epoque - Elizabeth Ross\" width=\"298\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> historical fiction<\/p>\n<p>The story is set in 1889. Maude Pichon is only sixteen years old when she runs away from an arranged wedding.<\/p>\n<p>She goes to Paris where the universal exhibition is about to take place.<\/p>\n<p>She ends up alone and without any money.<\/p>\n<p>She then desperately needs to find a job at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>The Durandeau agency is looking for young girls to do a particular job.<\/p>\n<p>Maude becomes a \u201cfaire-valoir\u201d, someone who helps another person look prettier by being less pretty.<\/p>\n<p>She is then hired by the countess Dubern for her daughter who has no idea what Maude\u2019s job really is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Anna and the French-Kiss &#8211; St\u00e9phanie Perkins<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-22008 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-hotel-guide.com\/fr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Anna-et-le-French-kiss-324x475.jpg\" alt=\"Anna and the French-Kiss - St\u00e9phanie Perkins\" width=\"324\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Genre:<\/strong> romance<\/p>\n<p>Anna is an American teenager who is sent to Paris for her senior year of high school.<\/p>\n<p>At first, she doesn\u2019t like the idea and is quickly homesick, but she falls in love with Etienne, a handsome boy at her school.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Etienne already has a girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t stop Anna from hoping something could happen.<\/p>\n<p>After all, she is in Paris, the most romantic place in the world.
