The <strong>Jacques-Coeur palace<\/strong>, which dates back to the 15th century, is the one gothic civil building not to be missed. As for the huge <strong>Saint-Etienne cathedral<\/strong>, it was registered at the UN World Heritage in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Those who wish to find a bit of nature may appreciate a stroll through the <strong>swamps of the Y\u00e8vre and the Voiselle<\/strong>. The <strong>stone houses<\/strong> and <strong>bridges<\/strong> over the streams clearly indicate a transition towards southern France.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>9. The <strong>Palais des Bonbons, du Nougat et des Souvenirs<\/strong> (\u201cpalace of candies, nougat and memories\u201d) has its doors open wide for you to come discover not only how nougat, the city\u2019s specialty, is made, but also how many other candies are prepared, which will definitely bring back some sweet childhood memories.<\/p>\n<p>Those less interested in food can also enjoy a bit of culture and history instead: the <strong>castle of the Adh\u00e9mar<\/strong> offers an unrivaled view over the valley, and also houses a <strong>contemporary art center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>10. The palace, which was <strong>home to popes<\/strong> during the whole 14th century, is definitely no stranger to that, as its height and presence make it a must for every visitor.<\/p>\n<p>However, the towers peppering the city, as well as the old battlements surrounding it, also act as reminders of its fortified past.<\/p>\n<p>As for the <strong>Pont d\u2019Avignon<\/strong>, which inspired a famous French children song, it is actually an unfinished half-bridge crossing the Rh\u00f4ne river, which can either be visited from up close or simply be admired from afar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>11. Right: the Calanques national park.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the <strong>second-largest French city<\/strong>, Marseille naturally has much to offer, but the <strong>old port<\/strong> truly is the place not to miss for a big breath of fresh marine air.<\/p>\n<p>The whole site, overlooked by the beautiful <strong>Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde basilica<\/strong>, makes for a typical Mediterranean view.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel like picnicking next to the sea while enjoying breathtaking views, you may stop to have a walk in the <strong>Calanques national park<\/strong>, located between Marseille and La Ciotat.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it is the sea, land or sky, the numerous hiking trails along the cliffs offer stunning half-desertic, half-marine deserts, even only for one afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>12.
