About this place

Reims is called the Crowning capital, as 32 kings were crowned in the Cathedral of Our Lady and its famous Smiling Angel. But Reims is particularly famous for its Champagne. Some of the best vineyards are to be found on the Mountain of Reims. At the centre of town is the place Drouet-d'Erlon, which is lively and bustling with cafes and restaurants. At its centre is the Sube fountain, topped by a gilded Victory statue. When in Reims, don’t miss the delicious pink biscuits that are traditionally dipped in champagne.

In short

  • Reims is also known as the “Coronations City”, or the “Kings City”. This is where King Clovis got baptized and where several other kings were sacred, inside Notre-Dame cathedral. Moreover, traces were found in Reims that date back from prehistory.
  • Most of Reims’ historic monuments have art deco style façades. Don't forget to visit the Place Royale, with a King Louis XV statue, and the Place du Cardinal-Luçon with the statue of Joan of Arc. Sainte-Clotilde basilica is splendid, just like Reims synagogue.
  • Reims has a very important cultural life: in May, the Brut de Scène festival is dedicated to amateur theatre; the Fêtes de Jeanne d’Arc ("Joan of Arc festival") in June gathers a lot of visitors; during the whole summer, the Flâneries Musicales de Reims celebrates music; in September, Jonglissimo revolves around the art of juggling.
  • Reims is the capital of champagne: you will have the opportunity to taste the best drinks, with some pink biscuits of Reims or some local gingerbread on top of the tasting.

Climate

Reims has a continental climate, with harsh winters, and dry and sometimes stormy summers. Average temperatures are 5.6°C in January, and 19.3°C in July.
