It is to Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas that we owe the creation of the Théâtre de la Renaissance and to their desire to have a theatre where they could put on performances of dramatic and romantic plays.
The Théâtre de la Renaissance was therefore inaugurated on 8 November 1838 with, as its first play, Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo, which was an absolute success.
Unfortunately, the Théâtre de la Renaissance aroused jealousy, and the Opéra joined with the Opéra-comique to close it down only 3 years after its inauguration.
It was only in 1872 that Charles Delalande, assistant to Charles Garnier, built a superb new theatre in a style very similar to that of the Paris Opera. |
