The Gare d'Orsay railway station was built for the Universal Exposition of 1900.
For about forty years, this station served the cities of the South-West of France until it was deemed obsolete and permanently closed.
People then wondered what could be done with this imposing building situated on the banks of the Seine.
Initially threatened with demolition, the Gare d'Orsay first became a theatre then a sales room and finally a museum devoted to western art from 1848 to 1914.
The Musée d'Orsay's collection includes the major works of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Monet or Degas.
