Lourdes is a small town at the foot of the Pic de Jer and is a famous place of pilgrimage for Catholics.
The Grotte de Massabielle has made Lourdes famous - that is where Bernadette Soubirou saw the Virgin Mary. The water that flows in the cave is said to have miraculous properties.
Between the porte Saint-Michel and the Vierge Couronnee, the impressive basilica of Saint-Pius X lies underground. It can accommodate up to 20,000 devotees.
