Verdun was the theatre of a decisive battle during World War I. The city has kept the traces of that trauma, particularly with the Douaumont ossuary, which holds the tombs of 130,000 unknown soldiers.
The Verdun dragee sweet is known across the world, and was invented in 1220 by an apothecary of the city. Today, you can visit the most famous factory, that of dragees Braquier.
